Just in time to join Laura Raborn and create a special gift this holiday season!

In this one-day workshop, we will use personal images as inspiration to create a meaningful piece of art. Students will print and bring 2-3 photos of things/people/places that they want to use in a multi-layered painting on high quality paper. Laura will discuss goals with each student to help determine which photo will work best for the workshop project. The paintings will be standard size to pop into a frame if you decide to give your keepsake artwork as a special holiday gift. 

The methods we will practice include building abstract paint layers to create a mood or atmosphere as a “base” for loose drawings using our photos. We will practice the drawings with various tools such as pencil, charcoal, ink, paint, and pens. This is an opportunity to experiment with how different drawing materials change the overall impression and message in your artwork. 

This is an adult class for all levels...from those who say “I can’t draw a stick figure” to the seasoned artist. Included in the price is a $25 material fee (INCLUDING A HAPPY HOUR BEVERAGE!). Laura will provide charcoal, colored pencils, ink, sandpaper, brushes, paper, paint palettes, paint, etc.

*If the class minimum is not met by one week before workshop, all enrolled students will be notified and provided with a full refund.

Join Laura Raborn for Telling a Story with Collage

Just in time to create a special gift this holiday season!

Get your scissors and glue ready! In this one-day immersion we will learn how to tell a story using photocopies, receipts, maps, newspaper clippings, magazine images, and anything you can cut out and glue down into your two-dimensional work surface. The goal is to create a special collage on a wood panel that includes a small sketch based on one of your memories. We will play with how collage materials combine with your sketch to develop meaning and narrative. This is a great opportunity to create a special gift this holiday season. 

Explore how content and meaning change as you shift and play with color, scale, texture and subject matter. We will discuss positive and negative imagery, contrast, surface, focal point, and composition as each specifically relates to collage. 

This is an adult class for all levels. Included in the registration fee is a $25 material fee. Laura will provide old papers, music sheets, book pages, newspapers, glue, paint brushes, water containers, paper towels, acrylic paint, and wood panels.

The best way to maximize your time in this class is by bringing with you several items that are cut out and ready to use. You can also bring old drawings to recycle in new work, along with photocopies of favorite words and photos. All levels welcome.

The focus of this workshop is to use drawings of the human face in playful projects. While we will address anatomical exercises and tips, we will not focus the entire time on strict drawing lessons. Instead, we will discover the joy of drawing loosely to create alluring and joyful pieces of art.

We start with a crowd favorite: blind contour drawings that quiet our inner critic and liven up the room. Then we will practice drawing techniques (and some tricks!). We will create two loose portraits using various materials - such as drawing the face full of wild loose lines on top of an ethereal layer of paint washes. Remember, our drawing does not need to be perfectly real or accurately rendered to be exciting and provocative. This class is for all levels…from those who say “I can’t draw a stick figure” to the seasoned artist.
